The Times leader today says, “last
night’s summit was a historic humiliation for Britain.” They are wrong – the humiliation was
exclusively that of our Parliament, not the people of Britain. Parliament sought direction from the people
but when it didn’t like the answer it had been given it did everything in its
power to change direction. We are now told
that the only way forward is for Parliament to, somehow, cobble together a
compromise. Past form suggests this is
highly unlikely, especially if the compromise is required to endure through the
law-making process. Otherwise, we shall still
be in this position on Halloween. The
only honourable course left is to walk away now – if the EU wishes to trade and
cooperate with us, as it is surely in their primary interest to do, they will soon
come back to the table.
