The BBC LIne on Immigration
After listening to "Today" yesterday morning, the BBC line on immigration is now clear. First of all, introduce the topic with a potentially scary picture of the impact of uncontrolled immigration on public services - schools, GP surgeries etc. Interview a GP Practice Manger to demonstrate the practical issues of numbers and language confronting typical practices. Next, "knock down" the introductory premise. Show that all these concerns are overblown and are actually the result of mismanagement of resources by Central Government and Local Government and ignorance of the true facts by the general public. At this point interview a moderate and reasonable sounding representative of a regional organisation dealing with migration issues. Let's take "Migration Yorkshire" as an example which sounds genuine enough but don't bother to mention that their work with Roma is funded by the European Union’s Fundamental Rights and Citizenship Programme and their "Our Integration Up North" training programme is funded by the European Integration Fund. Whilst sounding insightful here, point out that actually, immigration benefits us all economically. This economic benefit is then taken up by some national expert who will state that research and statistics (not specified or referenced, of course) show the net economic benefits of immigration. And of course, there is all that wealth of cultural diversity which we would lose if we restricted immigration. Do not mention that it is highly likely that the whole nature of the Nation will change in very few years if we carry on as we are. So there you have it listeners! You really had not appreciated how good, economically, immigration was for you. Any local difficulties were not the result of swamping of immigrants but were down to the mismanagement of resource by Government. You had not really appreciated the cultural contribution that immigrants make - shame on you! Actually, shame on you altogether for misunderstanding the whole issue and fixating on selfish and bigoted concerns. Next time we run a piece on immigration you will be receiving it from a much more balanced point of view, wont you?

Interviewers need to insist on evidence for all statements made as a condition for being given airtime! These statements then need to be checked out by channel 4's 7 o'clock news team as they seem so efficient in discrediting any statements made by the gov. !
