It seems there was substance in our leak from Brussels on
Monday. Hans-Olaf Henkel, deputy head of
the European parliament’s industry, research and energy committee warned other
MEPs “not to listen” to Michel Barnier who, he said, “wanted to impose a bad
Brexit deal on Britain. He also criticised the preposterous Guy Verhofstadt who
said he “wanted to punish the British, full stop.”
It is good news for British negotiators that some of our EU
friends have already broken ranks but it still leaves Davis and his team the
formidable challenge of countering his own side who are solidly backed by our own
ever-helpful press and media.
