Of the three stages of debate, the bald statement, followed by the flat denial, Matthew Parris has gone straight to the verbal abuse. Giving vent to his self-righteous indignation in the Times today, he writes:
“And I reflect that winter cannot last for ever, and, while it does we can at least sleep easy with our own conscience. The voters were faced with the awful alternative of Corbyn and did what they had to do – no more than that. Johnson is a man who offers olive branches on the steps of Downing Street to people he will betray. We must not be intimidated out of saying so. The assault on his competence and character is (to employ a phrase that’s current) oven-ready. It starts tomorrow.”
Only last week he was claiming in the Spectator that, “the Tory push north will end in failure,” which, thanks to Geordies leading the way, was proved spectacularly wrong, but even by the paragon Parris' standards the whinging bitterness is jaw-dropping. Presumably Parris will claim that, since the election was won by lies, the result should be subject to judicial review and reinterpreted by the Court of Appeal? Surely there should be an investigation into interference in the electoral process by the shadowy and sinister Dominic Cummings? Maybe, to settle matters, there should be a people’s vote? Indeed, Parris surely feels it his mission to save the electorate from themselves? What unbelievable arrogance? I doubt if Matthew reads the Telegraph these days but he should take note of Janet Daley's headline today: “the people have got their revenge against the hateful Remainer diehards.” Amen.
