This evening our constituency Conservative Policy Forum group will meet
to discuss and provide feedback on the Queen's Speech. The questions for
discussion are straightforward; what we liked, what were we disappointed not to
have seen included etc. Having read and re-read the speech in full, I
conclude that it is a monumental missed opportunity by a richly empowered Conservative government. There are plenty of
grand schemes to doll out public cash but precious little to encourage a
socially responsible property-owning democracy which should be the foundation
of any conservative policy programme. And by relegating defence to page 128
under "other measures," the Government shows just how much it
believes its own mouth music, "the first duty of any Government is the
safety and security of the British people at home and abroad."
Maybe, stealing Labour’s spending clothes and promoting a woke social agenda is
the only way to stay one jump ahead of a populist uprising and an Ireland-like
drubbing at the polls, and maybe that is the price that we have to pay to keep
Labour and other loonies out? As someone once said, "you
turn if you want to," but if you do you will lose a lot of conservative
Conservatives like me in the process to say nothing of your new friends in the North.
