Cuts 'will put one million out of work'
A shock-horror prediction by Price Waterhouse Cooper
reported in The Times on 13 October 2010 made grim reading and mirrored the
other prophets of doom writing at the time:
"A million people are expected to lose their jobs in
the next four years as a result of the Government's decision to cut public
spending by £83 billion, according to a report today. Nearly 500,000 jobs are likely to be cut in
the private sector as the Government stops building schools, hospitals, and
roads and cancels other contracts. This
is on top of about 500,000 job losses in the public sector as employers reduce
budgets by a third and lay off civil servants, town hall staff, nurses,
teachers and police officers."
Conservatives still have a good story to tell. The wheels will come off the UKIP bandwagon
and voters, in the privacy of the polling booth at the general election, will
realise that they are electing a Government not making a protest. The Party must keep its nerve. However, it would be charitable if it acknowledged
that we "swivel-eyed loons," maybe, have a point after all!
