In the Sunday Telegraph today, Janet Daley asks: Who are the
ordinary voters for whom the Conservative Party feels a passionate concern? And
how will it convince those people that it really speaks for them?" For my
priorities, may I refer respective policy strategists to Maslow's Hierarchy of
Needs?
But before you start compiling a list of compliant slogans
to secure my allegiance I have a over-arching concern. I am an ordinary voter and any party may only
begin to convince me that it really speaks for what I care about when I see
signs that being British is important and that honesty, decency and regard for
others is axiomatic in the way both the Government and the people behave. Please note that none of the forgoing
requires legislation or codes of conduct, either for perception or reality. Instead we need moral leadership, consistency
and example and, above all, the courage to seize the initiative from those who would
seek to rubbish everything we stand for.
